Carrick Knowe is applying for the Bee Friendly Schools Award from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.
Why are bumblebees important?
Ms Murphy explained in an assembly why bumblebees are an important part of our ecosystem. All bees are pollinators, but bumblebees are really amazing at it. Pollination allows plants to produce seeds and fruits.
Bumblebees can only get their food from pollen, but they are going hungry! Over the last 100 years, 97% of the UK’s wildflower meadows have been lost. This means we have to look after what we have now, and try and promote bee friendly spaces in the community.
Bee friendly zones in CKPS
We have created a special bee friendly zone in the allotment at school that includes plants and flowers bees really like to bee around. Firstly the gardening club identified an area in the allotment they thought was suitable. Then the P5s did the hard work of clearing and digging the bed.
P3 helped to plant all of our bee friendly plants.
How to spot a bumblebee
Did you know there are over 275 types of bee in the UK and 24 of these are bumblebees. 24 of these are bumblebees, and there are 8 common types of bee you can spot in the garden and local area.
Children have been learning how to identify common types of bumblebee and have been carrying out bee surveys in the school grounds. We also made some posters too.

We are learning not to be afraid of bees. Our P3s have been busy rescuing bees and helping them back into the bee friendly flower zones.
