In term 1 we have been learning about our local community. We started off by talking about what we already know about the community and what we want to find out about. We then made our own maps of the area.
We learned how to identify different trees in the local area by using a leaf and twig identification chart. P3A made some leaf prints with the leaves they identified, and P3B looked at the leaves more closely under the microscopes.
We learned to identify local garden birds and went exploring in the school grounds with our binoculars to see if we could find and identify birds.
We learned about different types of housing. We designed and created junk model houses in small groups. We then had a sharing event with both classes sharing their learning with one another by presenting and explaining their creations.
We visited our local library (Costorphine Library). We discovered what we can do in libraries, how to borrow books and did a scavenger hunt for different types of books. We had time to explore the children’s section and have a read of some of the books on offer.
We had a visit from our local police officer. We heard about what police officers do in the community, what they need to carry in their vests and heard about the different animals that are used to help them.
