At Carrick Knowe, we’ve been taking part in the RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch. So far, four classes have taken part, and the primary 4 classes also went along to one of our local care homes, to help residents take part in their birdwatch too.
Prior to the birdwatch, pupils surveyed the school grounds to check birds had everything they needed to survive the winter. Plenty of shrubs, trees and dead leaf matter were noticed, but there were few sources of water and very little food. The following week, we made fat balls to feed the birds.
Next, pupils learned to identify 23 common British birds, and could even tell the difference between males and females. Finally, we’ve been out to survey the birds. This was tricky, as the weather in the last few weeks hasn’t been very co-operative. However, we’ve managed four surveys, and entered our results into the RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch site. Brilliant birdwatching Carrick Knowe!
