Every year the P5 teachers at Carrick Knowe have the honour of dedicating the Jack Anderson award to a special Primary 5.

Jack was a happy, kind and friendly boy that sometimes found learning challenging. He consistently worked hard to overcome these barriers in school.

This is what the award is all about, finding someone who got on well with others and kept going when things were tough.

This years’s award is dedicated to someone who has come a long way this year and has had their own set of very challenging circumstances.

Lots of the adults at Carrick Knowe will remember Sophie when she started in Primary 1. She loved coming to school and worked hard to make lots of friends, getting herself involved in lots of sports.

However, the goal posts were very much changed for her when cancer meant she lost part of her leg and she had to learn to walk using a prosthetic leg.

At the start of this year, Sophie lacked confidence and found PE a huge challenge.

One year on, Sophie had shown such determination and confidence to overcome these challenges and she is absolutely unstoppable.

I also want to recognise the huge support that her peers in Primary 5 have given her, which has allowed her first full time year back in school to be such a success.

We all wish Sophie huge congratulations for this year’s Jack Anderson Award.
