Primary 4 were given the opportunity to go back to The Oriam at Heriot Watt today, this time to see a huge inflatable Humpback Whale.

The children were split into 3 groups and moved round three activities.

Each group had a turn sitting inside the inflatable whale, seeing how huge the whale’s heart was and learning that it needed to be this size to power this huge mammal through the oceans. The lungs were also massive in order to absorb enough oxygen to power the whale on it’s long dives into the deep.

We also listened to the song of the male Humpback whales.

The children were taught about how whales, dolphins and porpoises eat, drink and breathe by looking at their skulls, teeth and by finding their blow holes. We also learned about the differences between whales who feed using a sieve method, their baleen teeth and those who use tusk like teeth to hunt and capture their prey.

We found out about Killer Whales and Beaked Whales. Who knew?

When we returned to school we used collage to create these pieces of art work. We wanted to share what we had learned about the dangers of soft plastic being dumped in the oceans.
