Primary 2’s topic last term was Scottish Castles. We learnt so much much about the different features and defences of a castle, we decided to go and see a real castle to put our knowledge to the test! We visited Craigmillar Castle last Thursday, learnt the history of this beautiful castle, who lived there and seen some cool artefacts.

Here are some of the artefacts we got to look and learn about. We even had some volunteers be shackled at the ankles and try on the helmet for demonstration! We also got to see what shoes they wore if any and it made us very thankful for the comfortable shoes we get to wear today. We learnt that instead of smaller coins, they would break the coin in half to give them half the amount.

We got to visit the ‘poor’ dungeons and the ‘rich’ dungeons – Miss Lewis couldn’t even stand up fully in the ‘poor’ one.

We explored the Great Hall and found out Mary Queen of Scots stayed here while she was sick. We all manged to fit inside the Great Hall fireplace!

We got to do the board walk on top of the castle and we had the perfect view of Edinburgh. We could see Arthur Seat and Edinburgh Castle too!

This is us up in the turrets of the castle. We found out they would light fires here to warn Edinburgh Castle of any incoming trouble. They also used to have a cannon here but Edinburgh Castle pinched it!

Lastly, we had a shot at playing some of the medieval games they had. We had an absolute blast and everybody did Carrick Knowe proud showing all of our school values while on the trip.
