On Tuesday, Primary 4A and Primary 4B were very lucky, as they had a visit from a beekeeper. Last year in Primary 3, pupils were always learning about bumblebees from Miss Murphy, as the school worked towards the Bumblebee Friendly Schools Silver Award, which we now have. We thought, as we know so much about bumblebees, it would be nice to learn about honeybees too.

Mrs Paterson, who is a beekeeper, came to our school and talked to us. First, she dressed up completely in her beekeeping outfit, which protects her from bee stings.

She had brought in a bee hive, so then she showed us how to put it together, explaining carefully what each part was for.

Then she showed us photos of her grandsons, who were a similar age, looking after their own bees and making honey. This helped us understand the whole process from start to finish.
She also explained to us how bees are so important, as they pollinate flowers, and that if no flowers were pollinated nothing would grow. This would be devastating for the planet, and so we realise how important it is to have wildflower areas.
Finally, she answered lots and lots of questions. We were all very interested and sat quietly listening, even the teachers! Thank you so much Mrs Paterson. We feel we know all about honey bees too now.
