This year the spring was late arriving, and the summer has been colder than usual. As a result, the amount of fruit and vegetables we’ve managed to grow on our school allotment hasn’t been as much as normal. Nevertheless, we’ve harvest some and are using them to make soup with different classes. On Tuesday, Primary 5 made Scotch Broth.

We used peelers and knives to peel and chop the vegetables. Though we’ve done this before, it takes practice, as the peelers and knives are sharp. As the potatoes came from the school allotment, they were all different sizes and often needed bad bits cut out, but we did a great job. We had to supplement the carrots from a shop, as the ones we’d grown were tiny!

Once the soup was cooked, we all tried it and most of us really liked it.

Because we plant, grow, harvest, cook and eat food from our school allotment, we are developing a real understanding of the term Farm to Fork.

As we have done quite a few cooking lesson now, we’ve got really good at clearing up. We emptied the vegetable scraps on to our compost heap on the school allotment, cleaned the tables, dried up and put all the equipment back in the cooking cupboard. However, we couldn’t have managed all of this without lots of help from our parent helpers. Thank you so much for making cooking lessons possible.

🌞 SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER 🌞 We will return on Wednesday 12th August 2026! 🌞
