We have been thinking about life in a Scottish castle before the days of electricity, heating and fitted kitchens. Life would have been much different then! We thought about a variety of jobs that would happen in a castle a long time ago.

The kitchens would definitely be different, as would some of the food we ate and the way it was cooked. Food for meals would not be bought in a supermarket but either grown, caught or made from those ingredients that we grew or caught.

We made traditional Scottish bannocks, which are a bit like a very flat scone or oaty biscuit. We measured, poured, mixed, scooped, stirred, rolled, cut and baked. Lots of maths was involved and we had to be very careful to keep ourselves and others safe. We washed our hands A LOT!!

Thankfully we had an oven to cook them in, Mrs Mac was not going to let us build a fire in the classroom!
At the same time as we made our bannocks, we also made butter to go on top. We put a marble in a jar with 100ml of double cream and shook the jar. And shook and shook and shook and shook. You get the idea! After some great teamwork and some aching muscles, we made butter.

The next part was the best part…the tasting!

Some people added butter, others kept them plain but everyone was brilliant and had a taste. We gave the bannocks and butter a score out of 5, with 5 being delicious and 0 being disgusting!
The final scores…

We decided that we enjoyed the baking but were very glad we had ovens to bake with. Life in a castle seems like hard work!
