Primary 5 are currently doing a focus on food and healthy eating. The presentation of food is important, as it’s often said, ‘You eat with your eyes!’ In other words, you choose what you want to eat by looking at foods and seeing what appeals to you. Primary 5 were given the challenge of preparing a variety of salad items, cutting them in any way they wanted, and then laying them out on a plate to make their salad attractive.

Once all the salads were completed, they were laid out with numbers next to them. Then Mrs Henderson came down and did a ‘blind’ judging, meaning she picked out her favourites without knowing who made them, like on the Bake off. Two she chose because she felt the plates were laid out very attractively. One was chosen because she felt it was very creatively amusing, and one because she thought it showed a lot of technical skill.

Once the salads had been judged, children ate them along with some hummus. They also made posters about healthy eating.

Yet again, this wouldn’t have been possible without adult help. Thank you to the parent, who came in despite needing to rush home for an online lecture, and Gemma, the parent of a previous pupil, who stepped in at the last minute.
